The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God is not a place, it can’t be found in a map. The Kingdom of God is in every person, basically, it is a way of life. In this project we are going to investigate and discover more about the Kingdom of God. To show the love of God, Jesus did miracles and told parables.

Jesus wanted to have the perfect World, he followed his dream and he became baptised. It happened like this:

One day, Jesus saw many people beside the River Jordan and went to see. They were listening to John the Baptist, the holy man. John was telling the people to get ready for the Messiah.

Jesus went to the middle of the crowd and discovered that he knew John, because they were cousins. He asked John to be baptised, and then he understood that the baptism was the meaning that God was in the centre of your life. After that, John baptised Jesus.

When he came out from the water, he felt God inside of him and heard God’s voice in his head: “You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you.” Immediately, Jesus realised what special mission God had God had asked him to perform: Tell people about God.

Afterwards, Jesus became a travelling teacher and taught God’s love to everyone and everywhere.

Parables
A parable is a story with a hidden meaning. In Spanish a parable will be “moraleja”. Time ago, telling parables, was a different way of teaching. Jesus said parables to teach his disciples. Our objective in this theme is to learn more about parables, why did Jesus told them; and know some examples, like The Good Samaritan, The Lost Sheep, etc.

The Kingdom of God’s relation with parables is usually compared with the growth of a plant:

The ground… a person’s heart
A seed… God’s love
A small plant… a good action
A fully grown tree… the Kingdom of God

The Lost Sheep
One day Jesus was teaching the Kingdom of God. Jesus had many different ideas, Jesus wanted people to know that God is a God of love. He wanted people to understand that God loves everyone, and even if someone goes away from him; he will try to bring them back. Then, he told the parable of the lost sheep:

Jesus said: “Imagine a man has 100 sheep. He looses one and decides to leave the other 99 in a safe place and goes out to look for it.” He searches all over the mountains and when he finds it, he is delighted. He takes the sheep back the way home and says to his friends: “Look, I’ve found the sheep I lost before. Let’s celebrate it!”

The Good Samaritan
One day, a Jewish was walking along the road from Jerusalem to Jericho when a local gang beat him and took all his money. After that, many people came along, but no one wanted to get involved and ignored him. After that, a Samaritan came. When he saw the Jewish man lying down he felt bad and took him to an inn. He stays at night with him, and the next day he says to the innkeeper:
“Make sure that this man has anything that he needs. If he costs more than what I’ve paid let me know, I’ll come back later.”

This shows that the Samaritan (Samaritan people and Jewish people don’t get along), is better person than the other men who passed by the side of the Jewish man and did nothing; because the Samaritan was the only one who took care of him.

Miracles
The evangelists record thirty five miracles that Jesus performed. The evangelists thought that doing miracles were the sign that Jesus was the Messiah. Christians thought a miracle was part of the power of God. All Jesus’ power came from God. He used this power to help people. Jesus worked three types of miracles:

a) Healing Miracles:
Jesus healed sick or disabled people.

b) Nature Miracles:
This means changing a natural thing, for example calming a storm or turn water into wine.

c) Expelling Miracles:
This consists on getting rid of evil spirits.

When a miracle had an influence in people’s life helped people to understand that Jesus was the Messiah promised by God. When Jesus travelled all over Palestine he made:
*blind people see,
*deaf people hear,
*lame people walk.

Jesus resolved all kind of problems.

The Blind Man
This story is about a blind man that was very poor and lived in the town of Jericho. To help him, Jesus performed a miracle and the blind man started to see again.
Bartimaeus was a old and poor blind man. He lived in Jericho and the people that lived there knew him well. All people thought that he was a nobody, people didn't even call him by his name. He was known as Bar-Timaeus. One they all the people in the town were very excited because Jesus was coming on that way. Bartimaeus was very happy because he had heard that Jesus was a healer and he always had wanted to meet him. When Jesus came, Bartimaeus began to shout at him and when Jesus heard him, he stopped and Bartimaeus told him that he want to see again. Then, Jesus said:
- Go, your faith has made you well.
After Jesus said this he could see again and he understood how Jesus treats people.
This story teachs us that poor people have a very special place in The Kingdom of God.
A Person with Leprosy
In Jesus time the disease of leprosy couldn´t be cured. People who had leprosy had to live their family and houses and had to live alone in remote places. They were treated as outsiders because of the illness. Also, they have to ring a bell and shout unclean for warn people not to be near them.
A man was sitting among some rocks on a hill in the town of Galilee. He was shading his eyes, because the sun was high, with his deformed hand. Suddenly, he saw Jesus walking near him and he thought that he should warn him, so he rang his bell and she shouted very loud Unclean, unclean, unclean. Jesus stayed where he was, not like all the other people, which moved away. The man watched Jesus amazed and he stands up and walks up to where Jesus was and he said:
- If you want, you can make me clean. Jesus looked at him and had pity of his suffering, so he answered:
- I want to make you clean.
Suddenly, the man was healed. Jesus said the man to obey the Jewish law and to go to the Temple right in that moment. This was because he had to show to the priest that he was cured. If he didn't do this he couldn´t go back to his house with his family. After his, the man went to tell all the people what had happened and how that miracle had changed his life.
The Disciples
The Disciples were a group of people that chose follow, listen and learn from Jesus. This story is about how Jesus call his Disciples to follow him and spread his message all over the world. Disciples called Jesus teacher and for Jesus , his Disciples were people he talked things over with and depended on.
The Beatitudes
One day, Jesus sat down with his Disciples and explain them what the Beatitudes are. He explained that this were a list of eight good ways to behave with all the other people and with God. After Jesus explained that we have to use Beatitudes to be in The Kingdom of God, Disciples started to behave in this ways with other people and God.
Christians Today
I'm going to talk about how Christians are and act today, if they go to mass, behave as good Christians, obey God's laws and how they would respond if Jesus call them. Many people now don't practice religion so much like Christians did before, some of them don't pray, other don't go to mass and many others lost their faith to God, but also, there are a group of people that give many importance to religion and never lost the faith to God, these are people who go to mass every Sunday, pray every day to God to help them, when they have a problem go to the Church and pray and always obey God's laws.

Jesus and Outsiders:
One day, Jesus went to a town called Jericho. A man called Zacchaeus lived in Jericho. He was a tax collector so his job was to collect taxes. He was a very rich man. Lots of people did not like Zacchaeus, included the crowd and the Pharisees. Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus. There was a big crowd of people. Zacchaeus was a very short man so he could not see Jesus. He thought about climbing a tree to see Jesus, so he did it. Then Zacchaeus could see Jesus.
When Jesus saw Zacchareus up in the tree he decided to come near him. He looked up into the tree and said, ‘Come down Zacchaeus. I want to come to your house.’
Zacchaeus came down from the tree at once. He took Jesus to his house. He was very happy and gave Jesus some tea. Then they started to talk:
Lots of people were cross and dissapointed. They said, ‘Jesus has gone to have tea with a bad man.’ But Zacchaeus said to Jesus, ‘I am going to give half of everything I have to poor people. I have taken too much money from some people. Jesus said to Zacchaeus, ‘Today you will be saved. You have been kind to me. You have trusted me. You have a place in the Kingdom of God.

Jesus Forgives Sins:

One day, while Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting near and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.
Just then some men came, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed though the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”
Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, “Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — he said to the one who was paralyzed — “I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.” Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God.
Jesus and Sabbath Laws:
Jesus entered into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. And the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day; that they might accuse him. Jesus decided to sit near the man. Suddenly, Jesus healed the man. The Pharisees decided to accuse him because on the Sabbath day it is prohibited to heal, so Jesus broke the Sabbath laws. When they were accusing Jesus, he said: ‘I think that if I break a law to heal a person it is not a sin or a terrible thing’. The Pharisees couldn’t believe Jesus words, they were amazed.

The Last Supper
The Passover supper went on. Jesus stood up and took a loaf of bread, gave thanks for it, broke it, and gave a piece to each one of His apostles. As Jesus did this, He said, “Eat this, for this is My body which is broken for you”. Then He took a cup of wine and handed it to each of His apostles in turn while saying, “Drink this, for this is My blood which is shed for you and for many”.
At the end of the supper, Jesus told His apostles, “I give to you a new commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another”. When the supper was over, they all stood up and sang a psalm and then they left the room.

    Arrest and trial of Jesus

One Thursday evening after dark Jesus, Jesus and his disciples met in the Mount of the Olives. While they were talking they heard a large noise. They were afraid. Judas had arrived. Behind Judas there were lots of soldiers ready to fight but Jesus stopped them. Judas greeted Jesus giving him a kiss. Afterwards, the soldiers took Jesus to Pilate. While Jesus was in front of Pilate, the people around him were shouting
Crucify him! Crucify him! Pontius Pilate gave his verdict. Jesus was sentenced to death. Roman soldiers came and took him away to be crucified.

    Death of Jesus

On the Friday morning, Roman soldiers led Jesus out to be crucified. He was forced to carry his cross through the streets of Jerusalem. He suffered for almost six hours before he gave up his spirit and died. When Jesus died, the Roman soldiers took him off the cross, and some friends helped to carry the dead body to the borrowed tomb.

    The Resurrection

Early on Sunday morning, when the sun was just rising in the sky, some women went to see the tomb of Jesus. When they arrived at the tomb, they saw that the large stone sealing the tomb was rolled back. While they were inside, they saw that the tomb was empty! A messenger from God spoke to them Jesus is not here, he is risen from the dead. Do not be afraid. They left quickly and rushed to tell to the disciples. When the women told the disciples that the tomb was empty, they did not believe it. But Peter was unsure, so he went to see if the words of the women were true. When he was in the tomb, he was amazed. It was empty.

    Resurrection Appearances

After Resurrection, everything changed. Jesus was transformed he was different, yet somehow about him was the same.
